The origins of physiology at the University of Michigan can be traced to the Organic Act of 1837 establishing the university. This act included provisions for a professorship in physiology within the Department of Medicine and Surgery. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937.
